Toshiba Embeds Oasis Content in New Mobile Phone
Music on tiny storage cards may seem like a bizarre concept, but several companies are now eyeing the trend. The latest is Toshiba, which will offer exclusive content from Oasis to buyers of its upcoming 803 music-focused mobile in Europe. A mix of live and pre-recorded materials will come bundled onto a 512MB SD card, including an exclusive video of the upcoming Oasis single "Let There Be Love". Toshiba will also become the official mobile sponsor of Oasis live dates in Europe through December 22nd. The phone, which is the company's first 3G-enabled music handheld, will be offered through Vodafone later this month.
For Toshiba, the move is one way to gain a competitive advantage over competitors like Sony Ericsson, Samsung, and Nokia, just some of the companies that are knocking on the next-generation mobile music market. Meanwhile, SanDisk will soon release the upcoming Rolling Stones album on its microSD, flash-based memory card, offering an early experiment in the space. While a price tag of $39.95 may seem high to consumers, the space is still in an early, experimental phase. Other releases are likely on the way, offering yet another format possibility for labels.
